Case Studies - Recycled Commercial Planters HDPe

The recycled planters from Xtracs seem to be getting more popular every season. Currently offered in two models , the Burlington, and the Camberwell, the recycled material has many advantages over standard wood. The image above shows a typical Burlington Planter. Measuring 500 x 500 x 1000mm. The Planter is fully compatible with the Xtracs Xtracs Cafe Barriers System and is available in either Black or Brown.

Made from material which is referred to as Recycled Plastic Profiles in the UK or in the USA as Recycled Plastic Lumber.  It is extremely durable and has many properties which act like wood.

About HDPe

The whole selling point on new HDPe material products are that they are stronger, lasts longer,  is exceptionally resistant to corrosion, abrasion, erosion, and biological attack. This obviously has an adverse effect when it comes to disposing of it.

HDPe is probably the most recognized recyclable plastic and is used to make detergent bottles, bleach bottles, milk cartons, shampoo and conditioner bottles, motor oil and many other non-food items. These plastics will degrade eventually. A single HDPe milk bottle can lay in the earth for just under 100 years. In fact HDPe is actually used for underground piping to carry water, waste and even chemicals. This application alone proves that disposing of the material in land fill can not be tolerated.

But a solution is here. Plastic furniture is currently the “in thing”

A wooden planter can last, maybe two to three years outside, if a decent maintenance schedule is applied to it during each season. This may include rubbing down, painting, varnishing and even re branding.

The HDPe planters will last, literally, for many, many years. No Splinters, no woodworm, no fading (the plastic has a UV stabiliser applied during the recycling process) and if properly manufactured, very smooth edges.

Said Richard Falzon Director of Xtracs “Since or incorporation in 2003,  we have been looking to use more recycled elements in our product ranges.  Already utilizing recycled rubber bases on some of our retractable barriers, the planters seem to be the perfect progression"
